Greetings from Colorado Springs. I just got this here computer and discovered all kinds of tremendous information in the field of TR. I would welcome any correspondence from TR's throughout the US to bounce ideas off of. I am coordinator of a unique program called The Companion Program. It is a volunteer based program that seeks to provide volunteer support and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities in the local community. This grassroots approach is not without its hardships though (wait list, liability, etc.). Any feedback would be most appreciated. Write me! And Happy New Year.

In response to the job market for C.T.R.S., the job market must be good. For approx 45 days I have had very little response to a job posting posting for a Recreational Therapist to work as a Director of Activities in a luxury Marriott retirement community. The position requires a T.R.degree, is fulltime, with benefits, profit sharing, retirement plans and starts at $30,000 per year. The applicant must be creative, high energy, very outgoing and must be able to deliver programs that enrich the lives of our residents. Candidates must have the ability to plan and lead activities for independent and assisted living residents. Programs must include educational, social & cultural events, parties, arts, crafts, memory skills and deliver a variety of exercise programs. Musically inclined would be beneficial. Person must be able to supervise staff and manage an annual operating budget. This is an excellent opportunity for a person with the right attributes to join a world class company (Marriott), with a luxury resort style retirement community in the beautiful, but affordable Woodlands, Texas. The Forum at The Woodlands is not a nursing home, it is a full service retirement community. I encourage all interested people to contact me (Richard Schlott) at (281) 292-2600, or fax resume to (281) 292-1836. And Yes, as an employee of Marriott, you can stay in hotels around the world at employee rates!!

Ok, I just went on an interview and found out a very depressing factor. The position was "Activities Director." Did you know there was a 40 hour class in VA, that "certifies you as an "Activities Director." No other college background is needed. I just moved to VA and have my BS in TR. The job also paid less than $20,000 per year and the benefit’s were also not that great. Does anyone have a comment on this topic... please e mail me.

Help!!!!!! I am in need of some kind of assistance. I am currently looking into a graduate program in recreational therapy, but after researching it I have found out that the job market isn't as good as I had thought. In fact I read it is extremely difficult to locate a job and there are very few clinical settings left. Everything appears to be geared or focused towards mental health and geriatrics. I am interested in brain injured children or mental impaired children. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions as to what are good universities for this or certain states that have better job outlooks for TR's than others please write me I would really appreciate it. Also if anyone has any suggestions as a way to get involved with TR such as volunteering or working at a particular hospital or summer camp, PLEASE WRITE ME!!!!!! Thanks Chris

Hello everyone! You've gotta love the internet! As I was procrastinating before class I stumbled upon this homepage. This is wonderful! I have so many questions and thoughts, maybe this is the place to be! I am a senior at the University of Kansas. I attended the University of Missouri for my first two years of college. There, I was in the Theapuetic Recreation program. Well, something pulled me to KU. I am now a Sport Science major, planning to graduate in December of 1998. Unfortunately, I tend to realize that i should of stayed put. My love for indivduals with disabilites continues to grow. I thouroughly enjoy recreation and believe it to be beneficial to all populations, especially special! Therefore, I need some help figuring out where to go from here. Its too far into my sport science program to stop now. I like it alot, but realize my heart is with rehab. I am hoping to graduate, travel a bit and get into some field concerning health, recreation, fitness/wellness and rehab. I love hearing all your stories! Good luck to those of you searching for an internship or job! Let me know if you have any input for me. Also, the individuals who have written from Australia, I'd love to come visit you! Australia is calling my name! Take care! Susan Byrne sbyrne_AT_eagle.cc.ukans.edu

I really enjoy the site. I will be graduating from Texas Tech in December. I completed my internship at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston this past summer. If anyone has information regarding employment in the field of therapeutic recreation in the state of Texas please feel free to contact me. I prefer working with the geriatric psychiatric population, however I am capable in all areas and with all populations. HELLO!! As some may have noticed I am making another debut on this great web site!! It is addicting!! I recently took some time to read through many of the messages, and was disappointed to see those T.R.'s who have been in the field for so long (10-15 yrs) appear frustrated and provide negative feedback for us young-ins who are fresh and ready to fight!! I graduated from Grand Valley State University located in Grand Rapids, MI, back in 1994, and at no time did our advisor PROMISE that getting a job would be easy!! In fact, she reiterated many times that we would have to continue proving ourselves as professionals just as those before had to! I do agree that it can be frustrating and trying at times. But then I ask myself what else would I want to do?? NOTHING!!!! Those of you who are stuck might need to look into other areas or try adding on degrees for marketing reasons. This is a good thing!! This job has been the best for me!! Yeah we may not make the bucks! But neither do school teachers!! And at times our work resembles theirs! Soooo let's think positive and try hard to guide those just entering this field so they don't make the same mistakes or get LOST!!!! I've been in an assissted living home for geriatrics for the past two years. The company I came to work for had never heard of a C.T.R.S before!! I took this as a chance to start my own program and show them who "we" are. Last year they standardized us in their company, advertising for a C.T.R.S need in Maryland! They think we are the WHIP! (the pay has a little to be desired) but I would go back and do it all again for the EXPERIENCE and to show these people and in Maryland who I am (C.T.R.S.) I am ready to move on though, and fullfill my dream of getting back into rehab.!! Hopefully I will be able to leave this land of frigid darkness (I have lived too long in MI, please do not misinterpret!) Soo all of you in warm places give me a call I am ready to ROCK!!!!! Thanx for your time!!! C-

I am a practicing (you think I'd get it right) Recreational Therapist currently functioning as the departmnt supervisor in the third largest nursing home in Alabama. I have now twice erased long, somewhat angry expressions (OK venting). Let me simply state that my exposure to Long Term Care has led me to grave concern for our field and any relations it has with the NAAP (Natl. Association of Activities Professionals). The NAAP is mostly made up of paraprofessionals who certified through a 90 hour course or experience- no test, no mandated education or supervision by a CTRS. I'll take Dr. Keller over Cat Sellman anytime... I am trying to spread the profession in my neck of the woods... I urge others to preach TR in their "homes" also... I will be interning in Summer '98 and am currently searching for intern sites. I am interested in rehabilitation settings. I have worked with children in community settings and with various populations in a psychiatric hospital. If anyone knows of a great internship site please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Some people wrote that they get aggravated with having to justify our field. Well, I feel your pain. I know it can be aggravating because RT's and TR's don't get the recognition they deserve, however, you could use that as opportunities to promote our field. Let everyone know that this is the future. After all, how many people can say that they help people and have a lot of fun doing it. Keep the faith in RT and TR!!! Bye, got to go TR programming class. I know after reading everyones messages, this one will sound similar. Man what took me so long to find this place, this is a great site. I think I replied to about half the individuals on this site. A little about myself, I am a senior at ISU, and in my first year in TR. I'm one of those individuals who just discovered about TR and found that THIS IS WHERE I BELONG! I am beginning to search for a place to do my junior internship. If you have any information or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I look forward to chatting and learning more about TR.

Hi. I am a CTRS at a hospital in ND. I'm looking for some information about starting salaries in the Midwest for CTRS's with a BS. I am becoming frustrated with this field because I am constantly explaining what I do. Please give me encouragement and some ideas on remaining positive. If anyone has any new information on the benefits of TR, I would appreciate it. I think our profession will be greatly needed in the future because of managed care, but for now, it seems as if we need to work hard to gain the respect we deserve. I feel a little lonely in ND, as there are only 3 TR's in Bismarck and under 25 in the whole state. We do have a great program at UND in Grand Forks if anyone is interested. Thanks for letting me vent.

I am a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. I graduated roughly three years ago and I have not had much luck finding employment. For the record, no I am not willing to relocate. At any rate I am currently working a degree in business management. While I was on the internet at U.o.P. I "asked" for information regarding therapists who would be willing to train a "not-so-recent grad" and it brought me here. I have been reading some of the questions and comments. Evidently I got into the wrong discipline. Prior to, during, and after becoming a cota I worked with DD adults in job training, DTA, and Residential programs. Working with this population has been highly rewarding for me in ways that money can not measure up to. I do not want to take up too much space here as it is intended for recreational therapists, but I wanted to let you know that I think this website is terrific. I would like to wish the best of luck to all of you in your field. And to those who are in a similar situation to my own, just remember, one of these days the people in your profession will be looking hot and heavy for someone with your qualifications. Personally, I do not intend to sit here and hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Hailing frequencies closed!

Hi TR friends! I am so excited to have found this web site! I am just about ready to begin my Senior Internship on Aug.25 in Richmond, Va. I'll be working for 4 months in a psychiatric setting, Tucker's Pavillion, which is a mental health hospital associated with Chippenham Hospital and owned by Columbia. I am very excited to try my hand in this area! My Junior internship (we have to do two) was in Rehab and I loved it! I want to start looking for a job around October so wish me luck! I'm a little nervous about finding one because I've heard some depressing things about availability and salary. Oh well, I'm willing to look anywhere on the east coast so I think I'll be okay! I'm glad to see there are so many other cool people out there who love TR as much as I do! I had a fantastic 4 years in college and made the best of friends in the TR program (professors included!) Good luck to all the rest of you out there - remember to advocate for TR daily! See ya!

Originally from Manitoba, I came down to UND never having heard of the TR program and I was immediately impressed. Hello, Lord have Mercy! This internet is addiciting, I love it. Anyway, I am a recent grad from SUNY Brockport which is in New York, about 20 minutes from Rochester. I am working at Easter seals adult center which is a lively place to work. We have nothing to do with the medical model and everything to do with advocacy. In January we (about 15 people, participants and staff ALL of whom have a disability of some sort) gathered together with other ADAPT members advocating in front of the Supreme court in Washington DC for the NOT DEAD YET ASSISTED SUICIDE Law. We just came back from DC again, this time it was for the CASA bill. WE are also very active in accessability rights in the Rochester area. It's powerful, but I miss doing TR. Anyone interested in trading jobs? I would like to stay in the Rochester area, but I am willing to move. I have worked with most every population there is to work with in the traditional medical model settings. I am more interested in small settings and least restricting environment. Out and about in the community would be a GREAT plus. Least restriciting budget would be fun too (in our dreams). So if anyone is interested in trading jobs let me know. Look forward to hearing from anyone soon. Toodle ew.

The TR directory is a great resource for people new to the field. At the moment I am currently looking for game and activity ideas for visually impaired children ages 4-21. So far its been difficult finding anything that would be useful for this clientele. If anyone has any ideas please email them as soon as possible. A part from that I am a second year student in TR looking for good activity links for kids with multiple disabilities. Since the field in relatively new hear in Canada and my school is the only one that offers a BA in TR, it is vital to talk to other professionals for advice. Also ideas on behavior modification would be nice as well. THanks to all who respond.

The two hospitals provide Rehabilitation, Medical and Nursing Facility care to over 2,000 patients within a long term care hospital. To recruit and hire appropriate staff in TR we need to have information concerning standards as set by a professional organizations. We also want information concerning length of time a progress record should take one therapist who knows their patient during a 90 day review. What amount of time is given during a 35 hour a week to complete documentation requirements? Please provide us with information on specific standard requirements. I also work as Diversional Therapist in a Elderly day care centre for people with dementia. Presently in Australia Recreation therapy is only begining to be recognised as a profession, this is the second year it has been offered as a degree previously to that it was a diploma and wasn't given the merits it diserved from other health professionals. I would love to hear from anyone who would like to know more about Recreation therapy in Australia I'm always ready to recieve ideas or feedback about activities for people with dementia. I am a recreation therapist who is preparing to provide therapeutic recreation services for elderly clients in private practice. I have worked for several years as a facility-based recreation therapist in a long-term care setting and have found this environment restricting and constricting due largely to funding limits imposed by government. As such how can you make a career out of this? I am convinced of the viabiity of recreation therapy as a private contracted service for the elderly (and efen other populations). The evidence is there, folks: - an aging population - a desire for life long leisure pursuits - consumerism among baby boomers in health promotion and lifestyles and a demand for services that promote healthy lifestyles (either for them or their parents) - a population demographic (baby boomers) that happens to be on the brink of an inheritance of over $ 1 trillion dollars (N.America) from their parents Locally, there is alot of support in the private health care community. I will be developing clientele in two or more ways: 1) approach potential clients as a contracted service option for several private home care companies, or 2) approach clients on my own. If any one has any suggestions, thoughts on this venture, ie. legal issues, pitfalls, marketing, I would appreciate hearing from you. Also, I would enjoy net-working with anyone undergoing a similar venture. Please contact me at my e-mail address.

Hi. I was searching the Interent locating students that attend FIU, etc. and this is the reasoning behind the how I found your homepage. It is quite an interesting page, indeed. Hope to get my very own up and running soon enough. For the interim, my younger brother decided to reserve a facial photo of his sister and gave me a photo section of his page entitled "My Sister and her Best Friend Jeremy" There you can find me with a rather large grin.. That was the same timing/day I realized I would be spending much time at FIU, come this Summer Semester and beyond. I'll be studying at Thr College of Health..i.e. Dietetics/Nutrition, should be a rather eventful stay..ehehe, ehm. You mentioned you were always searching for a Floridan Key accompaniment, I have yet to travel further than Key Biscayne. I was at FIU, like 3 weeks ago..there was a tennis match (Currier vs. Muster)..so, after that delightful event, myself, along with some friends went to a locale, Coconut Grove..quite a place, indeed. Hope to hear from you, in regards of this e-mailer sent down South.. Take care and give Miami my best prior to my arrival.. Warmth and palm-infested climate go so well out that way.. Unfortunately, I will have to depart from this Northern schmuck of an environment and follow my natural basal body temperature to that wonderful place where we all go schooling, thank goodness for FIU. I am child and adolescent psychiatrist from Turkey and I am interested in conduct disorder. This is a ABSTRACT of a report of mine. Ysmail Yavas. COMORBYDYTY of ATTENTION - DEFICIT / HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER , DEPRESSION and ANXIETY DISORDERS with CONDUCT DYSORDER in CHILDREN and ADOLESCENTS. In this study, 101 children and adolescents under the age of 17 with a diagnosos of conduct disorder were assessed in the outpatient clinic and the comorbidity of attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder, depression and anxiety disorders was examined. Forty-one children and adolescent who did not meet the criteria of conduct disorder according to DSM IV but met other psychiatric criteria were chosen for the control group. The following self-report scales were administered: Hacettepe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Children 's Depression Inventory - Child and Parent Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC). Chi square, t-test, ANOVA, Mann Whitney-U and Kruskall Wallis were calculated through the use of SPSS Pc+ package program. 85.6% of children and adolescents who were diagnosed as conduct disorder also met the criteria of attentio-deficit / hyperactivity disorder. 61.5% of these children and adolescents met the criteria of anxiety disorder and 18.9% met the criteria of depression. While the comorbidity of attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder with conduct disorder was found significantly higher from the control group, the comorbidity of depression, anxiety was not found significant. The presence of disorders linked with conduct disorder was found to be effected by age and sex. Conduct disorder and attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder comorbidity were more frequent in boys, whereas conduct disorder and depression comorbidity were more frequent in girls. In conduct disorder and anxiety disorder comorbidity no significant effect of sex was found. In adolescents over 13 year-old, a significant comorbidity was found between conduct disorder and depression. In this study, the correlation between some specific variables of conduct disorder as age, sex, divorce rate, the type and the severity of the disorder and co-morbid disorders were also investigated. The results of this study showed the importance and the role of the comorbid disorders in the etiology, course, prognosis, treatment and classification of the conduct disorder.

Hi everyone! This is a great site. I am in my third year of recreation degree at the University of New Brunswick. I became interested in therapeutic recreation when I started my degree and specialized in it on my own. All of my experience has been in a rehabilitation setting and long term care. I am doing my internship this summer in long term care and am really looking forward to it. In Canada, I think that therapeutic recreation specialists do not get the credit they deserve. For example, respect from the other professionals in the health care system, salaries, and there are many misconceptions by many people about what the actual purpose is. Bingo, Birthdays and Bowling are the popular misconceptions. Well, I would appriciate some feedback about this concern. I am really facinated with the field and it is definitely growing. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

I am doing a senior honors project focusing on TR & physical rehab. I am trying to find out what the "typical" rehab. protocols are for paraplegia, as well as find out generally how effective physical rehab, is for paraplegics. I am asking because in my experince, EVERY single person I've ever met or helped treat (who was paraplegic) was only given or put through minimal physical therapy. These persons only got enough to relearn to sit up and use a wheelchair. I already know that more physical activity helps circulation, helps boost the immune system, and helps reduce the number of decubitus ulcers. I want to find out if there are additional benefits to paraplegics that can be expected in most cases, and if there are additional health benefits, then why aren't more paraplegics given full rehab? I have only seen full rehab offered for elite athletes (such as those who can afford to train for the Paralympic level). I want to know why this same opportunity is not open to more persons who want it. As a future TR professional, I feel an obligation to help clients access their recreation interests to the fullest extent possible, and to advocate for access when necessary. Right now that is only the standard at a few places (such as Northwestern's Rehab Institute of Chicago). I am having trouble finding sources/published studies on physical performance of disabled persons to use as references for my paper. If anyone reading this has any info that could help me, PLEASE email me ASAP. Thanks

Thank you to Charlie and all of the administrators for a great site. it indeed has grown since it's beginnings which were already a super place for those of us interested in TR. I am not a TR student at this time and those of you who read my postings, know I successfully completed a two year degree, in a great, great program. But it's not enough. I have been writing to the City University Chair about this, and I am expecting a "Don't expect the mountain come to you reply." However I need the mountain to come to me and other students who are left stranded with an Associate Degree. Someone said "The more you learn, the more you earn". Well here it is! We need a program in Brooklyn NY that at LEAST provides a bachelors degree, for our future individually, as well as a profession. Had the fine Program at Kingsborough (CUNY Brooklyn) been a four year program, it would be churning out CTRS's, strengthening our ranks of professionals. So while I write, and write I am taking academics at Brooklyn College. I am like David with a slingshot trying to enhance the CUNY system, but we all know what happened to Goliath. David obviously had spirit (He was probably an RT!) (smile). Love to all... J.A.M.

Hello, I'm glad I stumbled across this site while playing on the web.I'm looking into doing a thesis on therapeutic recreation and play therapy. I feel that these two professions have a number of complementarytraits. If anyone has knowledge of any studies on these twotopics or has a comment or suggestion- would love to hear it.
